Rogers City
Michigan
- Also known as the “
Nautical
City
”, its heritage is tied to shipping, fishing and recreation on the lakes. It is the quintessential small town steeped in rich-cultural history and where generations of families have called home. There is a strong sense of community here in
Rogers
City
; where responsibility is embraced and family is cherished. This community of well-kept homes and quiet tree-lined streets welcomes guests with hospitality unique to small towns.
Rogers
City
has maintained its small town charm and character even as it continues to define and evolve to meet the needs of businesses that can operate globally and act locally. You will find a spirit for family and humanity, a commitment to education, and a spirit of sharing and contributing to the future of a sustainable community. In essence, the
community spirit and pride abound in this town of less than 5,000 population. Increasingly, second home owners and transplants from large metropolitan areas are discovering what longtime residents have known for years – it’s a community to raise a family, run a business and enjoy the benefits of small town living. Onaway Michigan is located at the western edge of
Presque
Isle
County
at the junction of M-68 and M-33. This area was first settled in the 1880’s by Thomas Shaw and Marritt Chandler.
Chandler
was the first to plat the land, naming the town after an Indian maiden, Onaway. This town grew during the lumber era and was incorporated as a village in 1899, and as a city in 1903. Shortly after that, Marritt built a courthouse on the western edge of town intending to attract the county government to locate there. It never happened. Now the building
contains the local historical society.
Onaway today has retained its small town atmosphere, with the local economy supported by several small manufacturing facilities and tourism. Winter sports are popular -- as well as fishing, including Black Lake, historically known as a source for sturgeon, now a dwindling species; making Onaway famous as the Sturgeon Capital of
Michigan. - For pictures and information about Onaway, please visit http://www.infomi.com/city/onaway/
